Provider's Story

Lia Halasz, MD decided to become a doctor because she enjoys working with people to figure out the best treatment for them.

"Early on, I found I enjoyed science but was always interested in how it could improve people’s lives," she says.

As a college student, Dr. Halasz studied biochemical sciences and her first lab job was at Fred Hutch. "I spent my summers during college and a year during medical school doing research there. The amazing discoveries happening at the Hutch started my interest in medicine and oncology. As I began working with patients during medical school, I found that I was drawn to working with cancer patients as they faced with some of the most difficult times of their lives. It is a privilege to work with cancer patients and witness the strength they bring," she says.

Dr. Halasz is involved in clinical outcomes research for patients with brain tumors and especially interested in how advances in radiation treatment may improve patients’ outcomes and quality of life during and after treatment. "In joining the UW," she says, "I hope to work on clinical trials to address unanswered questions about the optimal treatments for brain tumors and to continue outcomes research to assess how we are doing currently. When our proton center is built, I plan to continue studying its use in treating patients with brain and skull base tumors." Over the course of her career, Dr. Halasz hopes that physicians like herself can make significant strides in the treatment of malignant brain tumors. When not at work, she loves spending time with her husband and two children. "Together, we enjoy hiking in the mountains and good meals with friends and family."
