Physical Therapy Volunteer
Volunteer Services continues to expand and adapt volunteer roles to best serve the SCCA – its’ patients, caregivers and staff. One of these opportunities is that of a Physical Therapy (PT) Volunteer, assisting and observing SCCA’s physical therapists. PT volunteers typically are students wishing to pursue a career in physical therapy and usually volunteer one day a week for several hours.
Candice Tesch is currently a student at the University of Washington (UW) and has applied for the physical therapy programs at the University of Washington and the University of Puget Sound. She has been interested in the PT field since her early years of high school and is most interested in concentrating her studies to oncology, pediatric or geriatric physical therapy. Candice commutes from Tacoma to attend classes at UW, and has found volunteering at the clinic to very rewarding.
“Volunteering at SCCA gives me a lot of exposure to the physical therapy field, especially since I’m so interested in oncology. I’ve learned so much from Andrea - she is just amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity.”
Candice’s story of when she first became interested in physical therapy is heart-warming to listen to. She remembers watching a television show several years ago that highlighted a man who had been severely injured in an accident and wasn’t given much hope of making a full recovery. But he was so determined to regain his strength and mobility that the physical therapist worked endlessly with the patient. Thirty years later, the program shows the patient trying to track down the physical therapist who had made such an impact on his life and to thank her for her role in turning his life of pain and suffering into a life that nobody expected the patient to ever live again.
While the Physical Therapy Volunteers are small in number, they provide a valuable service to our Physical Therapy Department. If you are interested in the PT field, or know someone who is, please contact Volunteer Services for more details.
