Resource Manual

The Resource Manual is your guide

When you arrive to start your transplant process, you get a “Patient & Caregiver Resource Manual.” This book gives detailed information about what to expect and how to take the best possible care of yourself throughout your transplant process.

One of our educators will meet with you to get you started with the manual. At first we will focus on the chapters that cover the early part of the transplant process. Before you are discharged from the transplant service, an educator will meet with you to go over Chapter 7 Long-Term Recovery.

You can read an online version of Chapter 7. There are two different versions for adult transplant recipients—one for those who have an allogeneic transplant and one for those who have an autologous transplant:

What the Manual Covers
The Long-Term Recovery chapter includes information about these topics:

  • How long it may take for your immune system to recover
  • Ways you can help prevent infections
  • Nutrition guidelines to support your recovery
  • Medications you may need to take
  • When you can receive immunizations
  • Guidelines for daily living during the first year
  • How to recognize graft-versus-host disease
  • Reconnecting with people and activities in your life
  • Guidelines for when you can return to certain activities

How You Can Learn More When you return home from the transplant service, you may have questions that aren’t covered in your manual and that your doctor at home cannot answer. When this happens, you or your doctor can call our Long-Term Follow-Up Program for a consultation.

You can find additional general guidelines for long-term recovery on the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center web site.
