Dr. Ernest U. Conrad III

Dr. Ernest U. Conrad III is Director of the Sarcoma Service, Professor and Vice Chair of Orthopedics at University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), and Director of the Pediatric Bone Tumor Clinic at Children's Hospital. He is also cofounder and medical director of the Northwest Tissue Center.

During his residency at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital, Dr. Conrad witnessed the first chemotherapy treatment for sarcoma. The patient, a 15-year-old boy, received chemotherapy prior to a planned amputation. Chemotherapy significantly reduced the tumor mass so that his limb was spared. In August 1986, Dr. Conrad brought his knowledge and expertise for treating sarcoma with the combination of chemotherapy and surgical resection to UWMC.

Conrad's specialty is orthopedic oncology. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, followed by medical school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He is certified by the American board of Orthopedic Surgery, and is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.
