Teamwork at SCCA
SCCA medical care is delivered with a team approach. This means that in addition to your doctors, you will be cared for by other specialists as well.
Nurse Practitioners
Our nurse practitioners are board-certified advanced registered nurse practitioners (ANRP) with expertise in cancer care. They provide acute care for our patients having problems with treatment and side effects or other basic health issues. Our ANRPs work in collaboration with your medical oncologist and the rest of your team. This treatment model of collaborative practice improves your continuity of care and access to your providers.
Oncology nurse case managers
SCCA’s skilled oncology nurse case managers teach, counsel, and provide support to patients, families, and caregivers. They are registered nurses with special training and experience in oncology. Working with your doctors, they manage your care and coordinate all of your treatment needs. They will help you and your family deal with challenges related to your cancer during treatment and follow-up.
Social workers Our licensed clinical social workers are experts in coordinating and providing non-medical care for our patients and their families. With experience and compassion, they offer counseling to help you adjust to and cope with the emotional reactions that often come with a cancer diagnosis. Our social workers provide patients with information on various services, such as transportation, finances, and community resources. You can ask your social worker to help you find a support group and other cancer-related services to help you plan this challenging period of your life.
Registered dieticians
SCCA dieticians are specially trained in general nutrition and the needs of oncology patients. Cancer and cancer treatment often make eating or digesting food difficult. Your dietician will evaluate your medical situation and make dietary recommendations tailored to your needs. The dietician's goal will be to help you get enough of the calories and nutrients you need to have the best possible health during your treatment. Your nutritional care may also include managing any side effects of treatment, specialized nutrition support, and consideration of nutritional supplements as they relate to your own unique treatment plan.
Pharmacists
Pharmacists prepare your medications during your treatment. These medications may include chemotherapy drugs and any other prescription drugs you need. SCCA pharmacists are an excellent resource for patient and family education. They are here to provide medication along with an understanding of what each one is for, the best time to take it, and how to deal with any side effects.
Spiritual and religious support
Our SCCA chaplains have a lot of experience listening to and talking with cancer patients and their families about their feelings, concerns, and questions. Feel free to contact them at any time.
