The Women’s Center at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance knows it can be difficult to find the time to schedule an office exam. That’s why we offer Mobile Mammography Service.

Our mammography van provides an alternative way to obtain a mammogram by using health clinics, stores, and other locations for on-site mammograms.

Making early detection easier There are many reasons why women may not get regular mammograms: money, hassle, difficulty taking time away from work or family.

SCCA's state-of-the-art mobile digital mammography van, donated by Safeway, will provide a convenient option and aims to increase early cancer detection.

"The goal is to remove the barriers preventing women from having screening mammograms," says Dr. Connie Lehman, Director of Breast Imaging at SCCA, pictured at left with Safeway Chief Executive Steve Burd. Dr. Lehman notes that women in Washington state have the highest rate of breast cancer in the country.

The value of screening
Between 1987 and 2000, the percentage of 40 year-old women in the U.S. who reported having a mammogram in the previous two years increased dramatically from 39.1 percent to 70.1 percent and already exceeded the Healthy People 2010 target of 70 percent.

The increase in the use of mammography over time has made early detection of breast cancer more common and has helped reduce mortality from this disease.

Despite the great success of mammography in detecting breast cancer early, recent articles in the popular press now suggest a decline in the rates of mammography use, which may lead to a future increase in mortality from breast cancer, which is something no one would like to see.
