A Guide to Good Nutrition During Cancer Treatment, 4th Edition, 2000
Cost: $10 (Orders of 6 or more books: $8)
Authors: Saundra N. Aker, R.D., C.D. and Polly Lenssen, M.S., R.D., C.D., FADA
An easy-to-use diet and nutrition resource for persons with cancer and other immunosuppressive diseases and treatments such as AIDS and hematopoietic stem cell or other organ transplants. Caregivers will also find this book invaluable. The goal of this guide is to help maintain nutritional well being by helping to solve the eating problems resulting from cancer therapies. This is a short-term guide rather than a lifelong eating plan. With recovery, the book concludes with a focus on resuming a healthy lifestyle and diet.
Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) Nutrition Care Criteria, 2nd Edition, 2002
Cost: $40
Editors: Seattle Cancer Care Alliance
A problem-oriented approach to the nutrition management of patients undergoing high dose chemotherapy and/or irradiation followed by transplantation from a stem cell source. Clinical indicators of a problem are defined and appropriate evaluation, interventions and outcomes are described in this comprehensive, 233 page manual. The criteria are supplemented with detailed nutrition assessment methods and tables. Drug-nutrient interactions, herbal and vitamin guidelines, and terminology pertinent to the HSCT population are included. A special section describes food safety, diet and water guidelines for the immunosuppressed HSCT patient plus diet guidelines for those with gastrointestinal graft-versus-host disease. Standard practice guidelines for managing total parenteral nutrition, fluids and electrolytes, hyperglycemia and osteoporosis are also highlighted. Clinicians working with HSCT patients will find this book an excellent resource for nutrition management of this population.
