Patients from ethnic minority and mixed-racial backgrounds are less likely to receive a lifesaving bone marrow transplant than Caucasian patients with the same disease due to lack of matching donors. SCCA is working with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to pioneer new transplant procedures to reduce the need for matching bone marrow donors. Read more.

By the end of 2011, most of the 255 Washington residents who received a prescription for lethal medication to end their lives under the state’s Death with Dignity Act had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Of those, 40 were patients at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, part of the Pacific Northwest’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Read more.

The University of Washington and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) partnered to launch UW-OncoPlex – an advanced gene sequencing test to help clinicians treat cancer. The new diagnostic tool is a significant milestone in the development of precision medicine and empowers doctors to predict which treatment therapies will be most effective for an individual patient’s cancer.

Last week, SCCA’s Dr. Rainer Storb was awarded the 2013 Leaders in Health Care Award for Medical Research, sponsored by Seattle Business Magazine. SCCA had several other leaders recognized by Seattle Business Magazine, including Dr. Tony Back, who won a Silver Award for Health Care Practitioner; Dr. Paul O’Donnell, who won a Silver Award for Medical Research; and Norm Hubbard, who won a Silver Award for Health Care Executive. SCCA and ProCure Treatment Centers, Inc. announced the opening of Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Proton Therapy, A ProCure Center today in Seattle, Washington. Located on UW Medicine’s Northwest Hospital & Medical Center campus, the facility is the only proton therapy center in a seven-state region and the fourth in a nationwide network of proton therapy centers developed by ProCure.
