Patti Kwok, MN, ARNP
“Patients are much more than their illness,” says Patti Kwok, an advanced registered nurse practitioner (ARNP) in medical oncology. “The care I give focuses on the whole patient, not just the disease.”
Kwok provides day-to-day care for her patients in collaboration with Group Health specialists. She takes medical histories, provides physical exams, educates patients and families about the illness and treatments, and helps manage symptoms. She is recognized in the community as a breast cancer specialist.
“A question I always ask is this: Is there anything else I need to do to take optimal care of you—psychically, socially, or spiritually?” says Kwok. “Patients may act surprised at first. It takes a few moments for them to reflect on why they’re here. Then most feel a sense of real comfort, knowing they will be taken care of.”
Kwok believes that what patients want most is to be heard. “That’s when they decide if they’re going to trust you or not. The initial interaction is critical.”
Kwok received her nursing degree from Washington State University in 1983 and her master’s in nursing from University of Washington in 1995.
“I’m always thinking way beyond cancer. Patients are survivors long before they get to me,” she says. “They’ve had issues they’ve gotten through. I’m willing to listen, if they’re willing to share.”
Patient Care Philosophy
“I believe in connecting with a patient to help them heal as a whole person. I try to see a patient beyond their illness.”
