Advanced Technology for Timely Diagnoses

Continuing improvements in imaging technology are leading to earlier, more accurate diagnoses–a critical component in effective cancer treatment. Overlake consistently invests in leading-edge diagnostics to detect cancer at its earliest possible stage. Imaging techniques include PET/CT scan, CT scan, MRI and nuclear imaging including bone scan. For breast imaging, Overlake offers digital mammography and ultrasound, and the region’s first dedicated breast MRI is located on our campus.

Designated Oncology UnitCancer Care

For patients who need hospitalization, the Cancer Center at Overlake has a designated inpatient oncology unit offering a relaxed, comfortable, home-like environment. The unit is staffed by specially trained oncology nurses who are experienced in treating the special needs of cancer patients.

The waiting room in the Lang Oncology Unit (pictured at right) was recently transformed into a peaceful retreat for patients and their families. This room can be used by patients as a quiet space away from patient rooms to relax, reflect or consult privately with physicians.

Collaborative Patient Care Teams

Working together to provide comprehensive care and treatment for each patient, the integrated care team includes board-certified medical, surgical and radiation oncologists. Additional specialists include dedicated breast surgeons and breast radiologists, pathologists, general radiologists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, urologists and surgeons. Since cancer care involves more than physicians and nurses, patients may receive support from other healthcare professionals, including:

  • Social workers and patient navigators
  • Nutritionists
  • Rehabilitation staff, including specialists in lymphedema
  • Clinical trials nurse
  • Pastoral care

Holistic Approach to Healing

Overlake patients and visitors find comfort through our Healing Arts program, bringing art, music, massage and a multitude of sensory stimulation programs to all areas of the hospital.

From the engaging visual art displayed in our hallways to the softly played piano music heard in the lobby, Healing Arts creates a positive, uplifting environment. Other program components include pet therapy, mirth visits from our own “laughter lady,” a Sit and Knit volunteer group that creates hats for patients undergoing chemotherapy and for infants in our neonatal intensive care unit, and much more.

Resources for Patients and Families

Patients, along with their family members and loved ones, often become active participants in cancer care. Overlake’s Cancer Resource Center provides a place to research a diagnosis and talk with staff and volunteers who understand the wide-ranging impact of cancer and who may have undergone treatment themselves.

Cancer Resource Center

Your resource for information, compassion and support, the Cancer Resource Center offers a comfortable, relaxed environment where patients and families can stop by to use the extensive resource library, meet with an oncology social worker and learn about support groups. Overlake has a wealth of information to help with understanding a cancer diagnosis, the treatment types available and what to expect in managing the disease.

The Cancer Resource Center is staffed with caring and knowledgeable staff and volunteers, many of whom have a personal experience with cancer and can offer understanding and inspiration. If you’d like to arrange a private consultation, a full-time social worker is available by appointment.

Committed to patients and families as equal partners

Managing your health is a team effort between you, your family members, physicians, and other staff, all working together to attend to your emotional and social needs along with your physical well-being. The team approach allows you to concentrate on healing.

The Cancer Resource Center is funded in part by the Cancer Center Auxiliary at Overlake, an organization whose members are dedicated to raising funds and awareness about this vital support service. The center is conveniently located on the Overlake campus in the Overlake Medical Tower, Ste. 240.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
