Safeway Donates $1 Million, Supports Breast Cancer Research and SCCA MammoVan
With a recent gift of more than $1 million, Safeway, Inc., has extendeds the company’s longtime support of breast cancer research and care at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and UW Medicine.
Again this year, Safeway has renewed its support of the SCCA mobile mammography van. The SCCA MammoVan offers an alternative way for women to obtain a mammogram at convenient locations in the community. Purchased and operated with generous support from Safeway, the SCCA MammoVan travels throughout the Puget Sound region to offer on-site mammograms at community health clinics, retail stores and other locations. Ours is one of the few mobile clinics in our area to offer state-of-the-art digital mammograms as well as access to radiologists who specialize in reading breast scans. Since the SCCA MammoVan began operating in 2008, it has provided nearly 10,000 mammograms at community locations throughout the Puget Sound region.
Safeway has also funded a number of breast cancer research projects at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and UW Medicine – projects that are helping investigators collect fundamental data to advance medicine and improve care for breast cancer patients. Safeway has also made a substantial commitment to programs that help our patients, including a wellness program for cancer survivors and the patient navigation programs at UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. In 2010, Safeway also helped establish The Breast Institute at Skagit Valley Hospital, a SCCA Network Affiliate.
We are grateful to Safeway, its generous patrons, employees and management of local Safeway stores for this significant contribution to our work and our patients. Thank you for making a difference!
