Yolanda D. Tseng, MD

Dr. Yolanda D. Tseng is a radiation oncologist at SCCA Proton Therapy.

Patient Care Philosophy:

One of the most anxious times during a cancer diagnosis is determining the plan of action. This requires a team approach, in which both patient and physician learn from each other about their priorities, goals, and expectations. It is important for my patients to feel well informed about their treatment options, since this allows us to make the best decision together about their care.

Dr. Tseng's Story

Yolanda D. Tseng, MD, believes that cancer is best treated with a team approach that includes other physicians, nurses, and technical staff involved in treatment planning. “It reflects the complexity of cancer treatment, but also demonstrates how collaboration and using each other’s expertise can yield great results,” she said. “Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and is, for many patients, their first major medical problem,” Dr. Tseng said. “Despite this, I am impressed by my patients’ strength and how quickly we develop a relationship built on the common goal of eradicating or ameliorating their cancer.”

Dr. Tseng has conducted research in diverse areas, including how physicians estimate patient prognosis and its effects on treatment decisions, and how tumor biological subtypes affect patient outcomes and the response to local therapy. She is interested in systematically evaluating how proton radiotherapy can be used to optimize patient care. “As treatment efficacy improves for many disease sites, the goal now is to minimize the long-term side effects of our treatments. My hope is that we can achieve this for our patients.”

Dr. Tseng has received numerous prestigious accolades throughout her career, including a Winston Churchill Scholarship, and the University of California San Francisco CaPSURE Scholarship. “I feel privileged to work as part of a team to provide the best care for our patients, and I am impressed by their strength during a stressful and uncertain period of their lives. The care we provide—clinical, emotional, and personal—is one of the most gratifying aspects of being an oncologist.”

Outside of work, Dr. Tseng enjoys being active with running, being outdoors, and spending time with her family. When time allows, she also loves to cook, bake, and try new foods.
