Veena Shankaran, MD
“Not only were the diseases fascinating from a scientific standpoint, but I also felt I had a lot to offer oncology patients and their families emotionally,” she says.
Dr. Shankaran treats patients with gastrointestinal cancers and works in the Pancreas Cancer Specialty Clinic as well. “Pancreas cancer is a tough disease to treat and requires multidisciplinary collaboration and discussion. I think the PCSC provides a unique team approach to treatment,” she says.
Her research interests focus on the out-of-pocket costs that patients with gastrointestinal cancers experience as well as the cost-effectiveness of cancer therapy — studying how great care can be delivered without wasting resources. She is working with Dr. Scott Ramsey, director of the SCCA Cancer Prevention Clinic (and an expert in the cost effectiveness of healthcare and health-related quality of life).
When she isn’t working, Dr. Shankaran likes listening to opera, playing piano, and practicing yoga. Her husband is a physician at University of Washington Medical Center.
