Ralph Philip Ermoian, MD
Dr. Ermoian was a civil engineer when a close family member became ill.
"As I spent time with her and her doctors, I realized I wanted to become a physician," he says. "Somehow I knew from the first days of medical school that I wanted to care for cancer patients. Caring for patients with cancer combines opportunities to make progress on treating terrible diseases while hopefully making an important difference to people."
Dr. Ermoian's research involves a number of studies examining the outcomes of pediatric patients treated with radiation therapy including patients with brain tumors, blood tumors requiring stem cell transplants, and salivary gland tumors.
In his lifetime, Dr. Ermoian expects that physicians will be able to use molecular profiles of cancer to choose the combination of therapies for individual patients that maximizes effectiveness while minimizing side effects.
"I expect radiation treatment to become increasingly targeted to avoid treating healthy tissue while delivering stronger dose to cancer," he says.
Outside of work, Dr. Ermoian enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, hiking, bike riding, and baking.
