Dr. Backhus's Story


Leah Backhus, MD, specializes in minimally invasive surgery for lung and esophageal cancer. “I truly enjoy the act of helping people and I like using my hands to make things work,” she said. “Being a surgeon allows me to do both.”

Trained in general surgery at the University of Southern California and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of California Los Angeles, Dr. Backhus is now an assistant professor of surgery in the University of Washington's Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Her surgery practice consists of general thoracic surgery with special emphasis on thoracic oncology and minimally invasive surgery. She is also involved in research with the Thoracic Surgical Health Services Research group, and has grant funding through the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Affairs Administration. “My current research interests are in imaging surveillance following treatment for lung cancer and cancer survivorship,” she said.

Outside of work, Dr. Backhus enjoys skiing, reading, and spending time with family.
