Oral Cancer

Overview

Internationally recognized, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance physicians specialize in treating complex cancers. We offer everything from initial consultation to comprehensive treatment, patient support services, and follow-up care. SCCA was formed, in part, to bring promising new treatments to patients faster. For the oral cancer patient, this means more treatment options at SCCA than might be found elsewhere, including participation in one of the ongoing clinical research studies conducted at SCCA and its parent organizations, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and UW Medicine.

About 30,000 people a year are diagnosed with oral cancer in the United States. More than 80 percent of those whose cancers are diagnosed early will survive. Unfortunately, however, the majority of oral cancers are not diagnosed until the disease has advanced. When oral cancer spreads, it usually does so through the lymphatic system, going first to the lymph glands in the neck. If treatment begins after the disease has spread to the lymph nodes, the survival rate is lower, only about 20 to 50 percent.
