Unfortunately, however, the majority of oral cancers are not diagnosed until the disease has advanced. When oral cancer spreads, it usually does so through the lymphatic system, going first to the lymph glands in the neck. If treatment begins after the disease has spread to the lymph nodes, the survival rate is lower, only about 20 to 50 percent.
