Our Doctors

The doctors and specialists at SCCA and Seattle Children's are among the best in the nation and have access to the latest therapies and treatments. Patients at SCCA are taken care of by nurses who specialize in their disease and by a group of doctors and specialists who meet regularly to discuss a patient's options.

There are at least nine doctors and faculty members on the blood disorders team, including radiation therapists and transplant experts. Nutritionists, nurse managers, and a patient care coordinator are also part of the team. Those who treat Aplastic Anemia specifically are: 

Akiko Shimamura, MD, PhD

Hematology Oncology

Dr. Shimamura is the director of the Fanconi Anemia Center at SCCA. She cares for children with bone marrow failure diseases and conducts research to find treatments to improve the lives of children with these diseases.

Dr. Woolfrey is a pediatric oncologist practicing at Seattle Children's. She specializes in pediatric blood disorders and bone-marrow transplants.

Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation

Dr. Andrews is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist with special interest in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation who treats children with pediatric cancers, autoimmune diseases, and other genetic disorders.

K. Scott Baker, MD, MS

Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation

Dr. Baker is the director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Survivorship Program, and also is director of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant program. He works with pediatric bone marrow transplantation patients at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and also leads the pediatric survivorship program at Seattle Children's Hospital.

Paul A. Carpenter, MD

Hematology Oncology

Dr. Carpenter is a pediatric hematology oncologist. He treats children with autoimmune diseases, leukemia, and lymphoma. Additionally, he is part of the Long Term Follow-up team for adult services.

Hematology Oncology

Dr. Gernsheimer treats patients with blood disorders like thrombocytopenia (low platelets), anemia, and excessive bleeding and clotting. She has an interest in transfusion medicine.

Dr. Storb concentrates his research efforts on bone marrow transplantation. Although he works primarily in the lab, he spends two months working with patients at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and two weeks on consult service.
