SCCA Facts

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Hutchinson Center), UW Medicine, and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center (CHRMC) formed the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) to unite the oncology-related patient-care services of these organizations.

In doing so, their intent was to:

• Establish one of the world's finest clinical cancer programs.

• Accelerate the development of new knowledge of, and treatment for, various cancers.

• Provide state-of-the-art, patient-focused cancer care.

• Enhance collaborations with health-care providers in the region to raise the standard of cancer care available throughout the Pacific Northwest.

• Promote and enhance the existing cancer research, teaching and clinical care programs of the FHCRC, UW Medicine and Children's Hospital.

The SCCA was created to:

• Conduct integrated outpatient and inpatient clinical cancer services at Hutchinson Center, the University of Washington Medical Center (one of the two hospitals under the UW Medicine umbrella), and Children's Hospital.

• Operate as a multidisciplinary outpatient cancer clinic on the Hutchinson Center campus.

• Develop and maintain affiliations with local, regional, and national cancer research groups and cancer care providers.

The SCCA is governed as a non-profit corporation, with joint and equal representation of Hutchinson Center, UW Medicine, and Children's Hospital, and with a separate board of trustees with equal membership from each institution.

• Dr. Frederick Appelbaum, director of the Hutchinson Center Clinical Research Division, is the executive director and president of the SCCA.

• Norm Hubbard is the executive vice president of SCCA.

• Dr. Marc Stewart is the medical director and vice president for SCCA.

Clinical Practice Sites

SCCA patients may be seen in any one of three facilities. These include new state-of-the-art, specially constructed inpatient units--a 38-bed pediatric hematology/oncology unit at Children's Hospital; and three adult hematology/oncology units at the UWMC--with a total of 86 beds.

The third facility is the new SCCA clinic, a seven-story, 150,000 square foot outpatient clinic on the Hutchinson Center campus. The clinic offers a comprehensive array of outpatient services for adult and pediatric patients, including bone-marrow and stem-cell transplantation.
